Europe’s largest battery storage facility could be built on the site of the Brokdorf nuclear power plant in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, which has been shut down since 31 December 2021. Operator PreussenElektra has announced plans to build an 800 MW plant/1,600 MWh storage facility. Before starting construction, the operator of the site is waiting for a permit to decommission and dismantle the nuclear power plant, for which the application was submitted in 2017.
The location is suitable for the project. An area of 12 hectares to be made available for storage could be created on the site of a former power plant. The company claims that there is no need to close the currently vacant areas. In addition, the grid connection of the nuclear plant is still available and could be used for the battery plant, which would reduce investment costs.
The location is also favorable, Brokdorf is located north of Hamburg on the Elbe. The nearby Wilster Substation transmits mainly wind power and faces major challenges due to fluctuating power supplies. A large battery storage system would be particularly useful in this strategic location.
“With our location in Brokdorf, we are ideally placed to be part of the solution to the current strained grid situation in the region,” said Guido Knott, Chairman of the Board of PreussenElektra. Together with our partners in the Eon Group, we want to start detailed planning now. Now we need to plan security to use our installation site »
Once the security planning stages are complete, capital will need to be found. PreussenElektra says it will coordinate this with an investor from the E.ON group, to which PreussenElektra also belongs. PreussenElektra said it would provide further details, including the final amount of the investment, after obtaining all necessary approvals. The multi-stage plan will be in accordance with the nuclear power plant decommissioning procedure. The first phase will be built on an unused part of the power plant site, the second phase will require the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant.
